The Espresso Roma Shows - A Look Back
As time has passed I have felt the need to look back...San Diego during the late 1990s was my home & the music of the time has helped shaped my memories. That's the Jack Daniels talking...basically two lads from Los Alamitos were attending San Diego State, both huge fans of the Rollin' Stones, & both employees at Espresso Roma. The fact we were both at SDSU meant little, the fact we both listened to the Stones obsessively brought us together, & the fact that we worked at a coffee shop meant that we had an excuse to put on some shows. Luckily, our boss let it happen....but the shows had to be for FREE! That was the loophole (supposedly) we could have bands play - we just couldn't charge anyone. No biggie! So our vision of a free showcase for San Diego's finest bands was born. I had connections through my friends in Heat, Ryan also worked (such a workhorse) at Off the Record by State which meant we could always rely on the employees there for rock n' roll, & the other folks working at Roma had been among the loyalist GoGoGo Airheart supporters of the time so.....we could make it work. Every couple of weeks lets have some bands play...good bands...& let's make it free...what happened next is detailed in this site.
Unfortunately, there is little proof outside of my memories & the flyers we created for each show. The only picture I took is featured here - along with my scattered, albeit detailed recollections of each show that is the only proof that any of this actually happened....so if ANYONE has anything to add -
PICTURES, MEMORIES, FLYERS, ETC. please feel free to share them.
